An .sfw file is a bitmap image saved in the Seattle FilmWorks Image (SFW) format. The format peaked in the 1990s when customers brought in photographs they captured on film to Seattle FilmWorks, who then digitized them as .sfw files and placed them on floppy disks or CDs. The customers then inserted the disks or CDs into their computers to view the images. The format may contain compressed data based on JPEG compression or uncompressed data based on the BMP format.

Since Seattle FilmWorks closed in 1999, .sfw files have become obscure, with few image viewers supporting the format. Therefore, you should convert SFW images to more common image formats, such as JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), GIF (.gif), or BMP (.bmp). While JPEG is a suitable choice, it uses lossy compression, which slightly degrades the image. Instead, you can choose PNG or GIF to maintain image quality since they use lossless compression (but they also result in large file sizes than JPEG).
