A .bmp file is a bitmap image. It is one of the oldest raster graphic formats and is supported by most image viewers and editors. The BMP format stores uncompressed image data, such as individual pixel colors. It supports multiple color depths, from 1-bit (black and white) to 32-bit (~4.3 billion colors), and may also include image metadata.

While BMP images are widely supported, they often have large file sizes because they are uncompressed. Therefore, it is common to convert them to compressed image formats, such as JPEG (.jpg) or PNG (.png). However, converting an uncompressed image to a compressed format may reduce the visual quality of the image.

Converting to BMP

BMP is a suitable target format when converting digital photos and other high-resolution images from less common formats. For example, if you are converting a camera raw file to a more widely-supported format, you may want to choose BMP instead of JPEG since JPEG compression will reduce the quality of the image.
