About JPG Files

.jpg Icon

A .jpg file is a JPEG image. The JPEG image format is a popular image format used for digital photos and web graphics. It uses a "lossy" compression algorithm to reduce the file size and is ideal for images with lots of colors. The amount of compression is adjustable — more compression creates a smaller file but may also produce a lower-quality image.

It's common to convert image files, such as Photoshop documents (.psd) and camera raw files to JPEGs, to JPEG since it is such as widely-supported file format. It's much less common to convert JPEGs to other image formats, since JPEGs are already compressed. Converting a JPEG to another format, such as PNG (.png), will likely produce an image with a larger file size, but without improved quality.

NOTE: JPEG files may also be saved with a .jpeg extension.
