About RAW Files

.raw Icon

A .raw file is a raw photo created by a digital camera. Various Panasonic, Leica, and Casio cameras all save photos as RAW files. The image data RAW files contain is saved exactly as it was recorded by the camera's CCD sensor. Storing the photo in this uncompressed and unprocessed format allows photographers to edit it more precisely. However, it also creates files with quite large file sizes.

Most image viewers and editors cannot open RAW files. Therefore, you may need to convert a RAW file to a more common format before you can use it. If you're more interested in retaining the image's quality than reducing its file size, convert it to the BMP (.bmp), TIFF (.tiff), or PNG (.png) format. If you're more interested in reducing the image's file size, and don't care about losing image quality, convert it to the JPEG (.jpg) format.

NOTE: Converting a RAW file to a non-raw format removes the raw data it contains. Therefore, you may want to retain a copy of your RAW file for future editing.
