A .tiff file is an image saved in the Tagged Image File Format. Photographers, graphic designers, and professional printers use TIFF as a standard format for storing high-quality images. The TIFF format supports multiple color depths, from 1- (black and white) to 24-bit (~16.8 million colors), and multi-layer images. To retain image quality, most TIFF files are uncompressed or saved using lossless compression.

Because TIFF files contain a lot of data, they have quite large file sizes. If you want to reduce a TIFF file's size, you can convert it to the PNG (.png) or JPEG (.jpg) format. Keep in mind, however, that doing so may reduce the image's quality.

Converting to TIFF

Many photographers convert their camera raw images to the TIFF format, to allow them to share and print the images while preserving their quality. Additionally, graphic designers may convert images to the TIFF format before sending them to a printer.
