A .pct file is an image saved in the Macintosh PICT format, which Apple developed in 1984. PCT files typically contain color images, which may be saved as raster or vector graphics. The first version of the PICT format supports only up to eight colors. The second version supports thousands of colors.

The PDF (.pdf) format has largely replaced the PICT format, so many image viewers and editors no longer support PCT files. To make PCT files easier to work with, you may want to convert them to JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), or TIFF (.tiff). Then, you'll be able to open the converted files in most image viewers and editors. Note that if your PCT file contains vector data, converting the file to the JPEG, PNG, or TIFF formats will convert that data to binary data.

NOTE: PICT files that use the .pct extension were likely created on a Windows computer. PICT files created on Macintosh computers typically use the .pict extension.
