About PCX Files

.pcx Icon

A .pcx file is a Paintbrush Bitmap image file created by ZSoft for the PC Paintbrush application. PCX images store raster image data using either an indexed color palette of up to 256 colors or in 24-bit true color. PCX images may use lossless RLE encoding to reduce file size.

While PCX is no longer commonly used, it was a popular format and is still supported by most image editors. PCX files can be easily converted into other image formats. Images using indexed color can be converted into GIF (.gif) or PNG (.png) images without any loss of quality at a similar file size, while images using true color can be converted to PNG, bitmap (.bmp), or TIFF (.tif) losslessly. Photographs can be converted to JPEG (.jpg) files to save file size.
