An .mrw file is a raw photo created by a Minolta Dimage digital camera. The photo this file contains is saved in an uncompressed, unprocessed format, which retains all the data captured by the camera's CCD sensor. This allows photographers to more precisely edit the photo, using Adobe Photoshop or another image editing program that supports camera raw formats.

Most image viewers and editors, however, cannot open MRW files. To open an MRW file in these programs, you must first convert it to a more common image format. Converting to the BMP (.bmp), TIFF (.tiff), or PNG (.png) format will retain most of the image's quality. Converting to the JPEG (.jpg) format will noticeably reduce the file's size, but may also reduce its image quality.

NOTE: Converting an MRW file to a non-raw format removes the raw data it contains. Therefore, you may want to retain a copy of your MRW file for future editing.
