An .xcf file is a GIMP Image project file, used by GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) for image editing. It is similar to an Adobe Photoshop document (.psd) and supports image layers, paths, guides, and other image editing data.

The developers of the GIMP application and the XCF file format often make changes to the format and do not recommend using it to share files outside of the context of a GIMP project. Converting an XCF file to a more easily-shared format will flatten the image and effect layers, preventing any further changes to those layers. Photographic images that you want to share are best saved as JPEG (.jpg) images, since the lossy algorithm that format uses is designed to reduce the file size of photographs while maintaining most of the image quality. Other designs can be converted into PNG (.png) images using lossless compression, which perfectly preserves image data while shrinking the file size slightly.
