A .pps file is a Microsoft PowerPoint 97-2003 Slideshow. These files contain a finished slideshow presentation that will open directly to slideshow mode instead of into PowerPoint's editor window.

PPS files can be viewed and edited in PowerPoint; converting one to a PowerPoint 97-2003 presentation (.ppt) or newer PowerPoint presentation (.pptx) will make it easier to edit, opening PowerPoint to the editor directly when double-clicked. Since PowerPoint presentations are the most common type of presentation file, other presentation-building applications like Apple Keynote or OpenOffice Impress support the format. PPS files can be converted into Keynote (.key) or OpenOffice Presentation (.odp) files for use in those applications.

NOTE: Newer versions of Microsoft PowerPoint (after 2007) use a newer slideshow format, using the .ppsx extension instead.
