A .pef file is a Pentax Electronic File, a type of digital camera raw file used by Pentax digital cameras. Like other raw image formats, it stores data directly from the digital camera's sensor in an unprocessed state. This extra data allows photographers to make better edits to a photograph's brightness, contrast, and color.

PEF files can be viewed in an image viewer application with RAW image support and can be edited in a photo editor like Adobe Photoshop. To share a NEF image so that it can be opened by other software, you can convert it into a more-compatible format like JPEG (.jpg); this lossy compression format reduces the file size significantly with a slight reduction in image quality. Lossless formats like TIFF (.tif), PNG (.png), and bitmap (.bmp) don't reduce the file size much but don't reduce the image quality at all.
