A .pam file is a bitmap image saved in the Portable Arbitrary Map (PAM) format. The format stores uncompressed pixel data for black and white, grayscale, or RGB images. PAM images may be digital photos or graphics and include one image or a sequence of images.

Very few image viewers support .pam files, which is why many convert PAM images to standard image formats, such as JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), GIF (.gif), or BMP (.bmp). JPEG is a popular choice because so many image viewers support the format. However, JPEG uses lossy compression to reduce the size of the file, which also slightly degrades the image. If you want to maintain image quality or transparency in the graphic, you can choose PNG or GIF, which uses lossless compression that does not degrade the image when compressing it.
