An .erf file is an Epson Raw digital camera raw image. Raw images are a special kind of image that contain uncompressed, unprocessed data from a digital camera's sensor. Photographers use raw images because they capture extra data that allows them to make higher-quality adjustments to their photos.

ERF files can be opened by image viewer applications that support RAW formats, as well as Epson's proprietary software. They can be converted from raw images into shareable image files, like the JPEG (.jpg) format that uses lossy compression to shrink a photograph's file size. Other formats, like TIFF (.tif), bitmap (.bmp), and PNG (.png) can be used to store the full-quality image at a larger file size that is more compatible with more software.
