An .exr file is an image saved in the OpenEXR image format. This format is used primarily by visual effects artists and animators in the movie industry. EXR files can contain single- or multi-layer images, compressed using lossy or lossless compression. The EXR format also supports high dynamic range (HDR) compositing.

While some more-robust image viewing and editing programs can open EXR files, many common programs cannot. For this reason, you may want to convert EXR files to a more common image format. If your EXR file contains a multi-layer image, you should convert it to another format that supports layers, such as the Adobe Photoshop Document (.psd) format.
