A .dpx file is a bitmap image saved in the Digital Picture Exchange (DPX) format. Film professionals often use DPX for transferring images from film to a digital format without degrading quality. DPX files may be a single film frame or a sequence comprising multiple still images.

Not many image viewers can open DPX images, which is one reason why many users convert them to other image formats, such as JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), GIF (.gif), or BMP (.bmp). While JPEG is an excellent option supported by more systems and apps, the format uses lossy compression that slightly degrades the image when reducing the size. Instead of JPEG, you can choose PNG or GIF, which uses lossless compression and supports transparency. You can also convert DPX images to BMP images, which are uncompressed to maintain image quality (but they result in large file sizes).
