A .dotx file is a Microsoft Word template document. It stores a predefined page layout and is used as a baseline to create multiple Word documents using the same style and formatting. Microsoft Word includes many built-in document templates, but you can also create your own.

While Word can use a template to create new documents, you can also convert it to other document formats to edit. Converting a template to a Word Document (.docx) preserves all its settings and formatting. Rich Text Format (.rtf) preserves some formatting but will lose some data and features. Converting a template to PDF (.pdf) will keep the template's appearance but won't be editable by most software.

NOTE: Older versions of Microsoft Word (before 2007) saved templates in a different format, using the .dot extension.
