A .xls is a Microsoft Excel 97-2003 spreadsheet. These files are commonly used in business and education to analyze, manipulate, and visualize data. Each spreadsheet file contains a table of data stored in rows and columns; they can also include charts and graphs.

While many spreadsheet programs can open and save .xls files, they can be converted to other spreadsheet formats. Newer versions of Excel (after 2007) use a different file format with the .xlsx extension. An XLS file can also be converted to the proprietary format for Apple Numbers (.numbers) or OpenOffice Calc (.ods). Spreadsheets can also be exported into Comma-Separated Values (.csv) files, which store data as plain text viewable in any spreadsheet application or plain text editor.
