A .pnm file is a bitmap image saved in the Portable Any Map (PAM) format. The format stores pixel data for grayscale, portable monochrome, and color images. PAM images may be digital photos or graphics.

Since the PAM format is obscure, not many image viewers can open .pnm files. Therefore, you should convert .pnm images to more common image formats, such as JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), GIF (.gif), or BMP (.bmp). JPEG is a widely supported format that features lossy compression, which significantly reduces file size but also reduces the quality of the image. PNG and GIF formats feature lossless compression that won't degrade the image but result in large file sizes than JPEG.
