A .pgm file is a grayscale image saved in the Portable Gray Map format. This format is used primarily by Netpbm, an image manipulation library created by Jef Poskanzer. Unlike many other types of raster images, PGM images can be saved in either a plain text or binary format. Binary PGM files may contain more than one image.

PGM files are uncompressed, and so may take up a lot of storage space on your device. Also, not all image viewers and editors can open PGM files. For these reasons, you may want to convert PGM files to common compressed image formats, such as JPEG (.jpg) or PNG (.png).
