An .odt file is an OpenDocument Text (ODT) document. It is similar to the Microsoft Word DOCX (.docx) format but is an open format commonly created by the Writer word processor included with LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice suites. Typically, students and other users who do not have access to Word save their documents, including reports, essays, and resumes, as .odt files.

While ODT is a suitable format for saving documents, you may want to convert your .odt file to the industry-standard DOCX format. However, some document formatting may be altered slightly during conversion. Additionally, you can convert your .odt file to other formats, such as PDF (.pdf), Rich Text (.rtf), or even plain text (.txt). The PDF format will closely maintain the appearance of the .odt document but is difficult to edit. The Rich Text Format may preserve some of the formatting of the .odt document but does not support as many features. Finally, if you convert an .odt file to a plain text file, all the formatting will be lost, and only the text will remain.
