An .heic file is an image saved in the High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF). Apple developed the format to store images at a higher quality and smaller size than the standard JPEG format. HEIF images most often store digital photographs captured by an Apple iPhone.

While some image viewers can open .heic files, you may want to convert .heic images to JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), GIF (.gif), or BMP (.bmp), since many more apps and systems support the formats. JPEG is an excellent choice since so many image viewers support the format and you can publish it online. However, its lossy compression will slightly degrade the image so you may want to choose PNG or GIF, which uses lossless compression to maintain the quality of the image. Additionally, PNG and GIF support image transparency, whereas JPEG does not.
