About DOC Files

.doc Icon

A .doc file is a Microsoft Word document. The DOC format was standard in the 1990s and 2000s but has declined because Microsoft replaced it with the DOCX (.docx) format when it released Word 2007. Although the DOC format is not as common as it once was, you may still find documents, such as reports, letters, or resumes, saved as .doc files on your computer or receive them as email attachments.

Since Microsoft replaced .doc files with .docx files, you will want to convert your .doc file to the DOCX format to ensure that you can continue to edit it as word processors eventually drop support for the DOC format. However, since .docx files are saved in a different format than .doc files, your document's formatting may be slightly altered. Additionally, you can convert your .doc file to the Rich Text (.rtf) format, which nearly every word processor supports (although this will lead to the loss of complex formatting, such as tables and images). And finally, if you no longer need to edit the document and want to preserve its appearance, you can convert your .doc file to the PDF (.pdf) format.
