An .xlsx file is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Businesses, academics, and laypeople use XLSX files to record, analyze, and visualize data. For example, a business might store a list of their clients and associated data in an XLSX file, while a layperson might record their household's budget and expenses. You can open and edit XLSX files with Microsoft Excel, Apple Numbers, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice Calc.

If you want to view an XLSX file's contents outside a spreadsheet program, you can convert it to the Comma-Separated Values (.csv) or PDF (.pdf) format. Converting an XLSX file to the CSV format will allow you to open it with any plain text editor (but will also discard any formatting, graphs, or charts the spreadsheet included). Converting to the PDF format will allow you to open the file with Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, or any web browser, but will also make the file's contents uneditable.
