About PUB Files

.pub Icon

A .pub file is a Microsoft Publisher document. It is the default format for storing page layout, text, images, and design elements with Publisher. Casual and professional users typically use Publisher for designing marketing materials, business publications, and personal projects, such as brochures, newsletters, flyers, invitations, and posters.

Microsoft introduced the Publisher Document (PUB) format in 1991 when it released Publisher as part of the Microsoft Office suite. Over the years, Microsoft has released many versions of the format, with each iteration providing new capabilities (FileHelper.com supports some, but not all, of the different PUB format versions).

Converting PUB Files

Since Microsoft Publisher is not as widely used as other Office applications, like Word or PowerPoint, viewing PUB files can be challenging without the software. Therefore, you may want to convert PUB files to a file format that is more widely supported when sharing them with others. Some common options include:

  • Converting to PDF: Best for preserving layout and formatting, making it ideal for sharing and printing. However, editing the content later can be difficult.
  • Converting to JPEG: Great for quick sharing and web use but loses quality with compression and doesn’t support transparency.
  • Converting to PNG: Maintains high quality and supports transparency, making it good for graphics, but file sizes can be larger than JPEG.
  • Converting to TIFF: Offers the highest quality with no compression, great for professional printing, but results in substantial file sizes.
