About IMF Files

.imf Icon

An .imf file is an audio file saved in the Id Music File (IMF) format, a compressed music format developed by id Software for use in early PC video games. IMF files store music as sequences of notes, instruments, and playback instructions rather than as recorded audio, which allows the files to be very small while recreating rich, multi-instrumental game soundtracks.

Many classic id Software titles, such as Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, and Commander Keen, used the IMF format to deliver dynamic in-game music that looped seamlessly during gameplay. IMF files are most often located within game data archives, but may also appear as standalone files when extracted from game installations or shared by retro gaming communities. Users can open and play .imf files on File Viewer Plus by dragging them to the program.

Converting IMF Files

You can convert .imf files to other formats to improve compatibility:

  • Converting to MP3: Converts the music from an IMF file playable on almost any device or media player, though it applies lossy compression that may slightly reduce the original sound fidelity.
  • Converting to AAC: Converts the audio to a more efficient format, producing smaller files while maintaining good audio quality and compatibility with modern devices and streaming platforms.
