An .htm file is a webpage written in the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). The text an .htm file contains defines a webpage's elements and layout. Web browsers, such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, process the tags in .htm files and render them as a webpage.

While most webpages are saved with a .html extension, some Microsoft web development applications save them as .htm files. If an .htm file does not open correctly as a webpage, you can try changing the file extension to .html. If you want to view or edit an .htm file as a plain text document, you can change its extension to .txt and open it in a text editor.
