About SPX Files

.spx Icon

An .spx file is an audio file that likely stores a voice recording, music, or sound effects. It contains audio data in the Ogg Vorbis container format encoded with the Speex Audio codec and supports metadata.

Since the Speex codec is optimized for voice recordings, .spx files became a common method for transmitting and storing speech in the 2000s for various VoIP applications, podcasts, audiobooks, and video games. While the Xiph.Org Foundation no longer actively develops Speex, and the more advanced Opus codec surpassed it in efficiency, .spx files still remain a common choice for sharing and storing voice recordings.

Converting SPX Files

You may want to convert an .spx file to MP3 format since it is more widely supported. However, there will likely be some quality loss since the MP3 format is less efficient for storing voice recordings than Speex.

You can also convert .spx files to the AAC format, which is a better option than the MP3 format for retaining quality and is also widely supported (not as much as the MP3 format). However, both the AAC and Speex formats are lossy, which will result in some quality loss, and the resulting .aac file size will likely be larger than the original .spx file.
