About OPUS Files

An .opus file is an audio file saved in the Opus format, a lossy audio format that uses the SILK and CELT codecs. The codecs are typically stored in the Ogg audio container format, but common multimedia containers, such as Matroska, WebM, and MP4, also support them.

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) develops Opus, maintaining it as an open, royalty-free standard. It originated from the collaboration between Xiph.Org and Skype (the SILK codec is used by Skype, and the CELT codec is used by Xiph.Org) to create a versatile, high-quality codec that adapts to varying bitrates, making it a good option for storing speech and music. Opus can also adapt to various bandwidths and adjust in real-time to network conditions, which led to many online applications for VoIP, streaming, and interactive media, including WhatsApp and Discord, adopting the format.

Converting OPUS Files

You may want to convert an .opus file to an .mp3 file since more devices and media players support the MP3 format. However, MP3 is less efficient than Opus, meaning the audio quality will be slightly degraded, and the .mp3 file size will likely be larger.

You can also convert .opus files to the AAC format, which generally results in better sound quality than MP3. However, the .aac files may still result in minor quality loss compared to the .opus file due to re-compression (depending on the bitrate).
