About MP1 Files

.mp1 Icon

An .mp1 file is an audio file saved in the MPEG-1 Audio Layer I (MP1) compressed format. It uses lossy audio compression that reduces file size by removing sound data outside the typical range of human hearing, making it more efficient for early digital audio systems.

The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), under ISO and IEC, introduced the MP1 format in the early 1990s as part of the MPEG-1 standard. Although it was one of the first widely adopted digital audio compression methods, MP1 quickly became obsolete as MP2 and MP3 offered better compression and sound quality. MP1 files are now uncommon, but you may still encounter them in older multimedia systems.

Converting MP1 Files

You can convert .mp1 files to other formats to increase compatibility or reduce storage space:

  • Converting to MP3: Improves playback support on modern devices, though you may lose some audio quality during compression.
  • Converting to AAC: Offers better compression efficiency and improved compatibility with Apple devices and streaming platforms, though it still uses lossy compression.
