About CDR Files

.cdr Icon

A .cdr file is a CorelDRAW (CDR) vector graphic. It is the default format for storing logos, illustrations, brochures, and other vector-based graphical content with CorelDRAW. Unlike raster images (such as JPEG or PNG) that save individual pixels, CDR files store graphics as mathematical formulas that define shapes, lines, and colors, allowing for scalability without losing quality.

Corel introduced the CDR format in 1989, and it has evolved alongside the software, with new versions of CorelDRAW introducing improvements in features, compatibility, and file structure. Because of the many versions of the CDR format, FileHelper.com supports some, but not all, variations.

Converting CDR Files

While the CDR format is widely used, it is proprietary, making it difficult to open CDR files without the appropriate software. Therefore, you may want to convert CDR files to a more widely supported format when sending it to non-designers or sharing it online. Some common options include:

  • Converting to JPEG: Offers broader compatibility among devices and programs but results in quality loss, the flattening of the editable layers of the image, and loss of scalability.
  • Converting to PNG: Preserves quality and supports transparency, making it better than JPEG, especially for graphics and logos. However, PNG files also flatten editable layers, will likely be larger, and are not scalable.
  • Converting to SVG: Retains scalability without quality loss and losing editable vector elements. It also supports transparency and is lightweight for online publishing. However, SVG is not as widely supported as other image formats, will not preserve all effects, and is not ideal for high-resolution printing.
  • Converting to PDF: The PDF format maintains vector quality, is widely compatible, and is great for printing. Some downsides are that it is not as editable, is not a good option for web graphics, and is likely larger in size than CDR.
  • Converting to ODG: An editable, open-source alternative for basic vector graphics that is likely smaller in size. However, ODG is not widely supported, is not ideal for professional printing, and will lose advanced design elements.
