An .au3 file is a script file that contains instructions written in the AutoIt scripting language. AutoIt automates tasks in Windows by controlling programs, windows, menus, and other user interface elements. AU3 files can contain commands that launch applications, enter text, click buttons, move or manipulate files, and perform other repetitive tasks automatically.

AutoIt was created in the late 1990s to automate software installation and administration tasks in Windows, and it has since been used for a wide range of desktop automation projects. IT administrators, software testers, developers, and other Windows users have created AU3 files to automate repetitive tasks, install and configure software, test applications, and build small utilities. AutoIt remains particularly useful for automating Windows programs that may not provide their own scripting or automation features.

You can open and edit .au3 files with a text editor or an AutoIt-compatible script editor because they contain human-readable source code. To run an AU3 script as an automated task, however, you need AutoIt or another application capable of interpreting the script. AutoIt can also compile AU3 scripts into standalone Windows executable (.EXE) files.
