An .asp file is a webpage file used to create dynamic content for websites and web applications. Unlike a standard HTML file, an ASP file can contain server-side instructions that a web server processes before sending the resulting page to a visitor's web browser. ASP files commonly contain a combination of HTML, scripting code, and other elements used to generate or customize the content displayed on a website. The .asp extension is most commonly associated with Microsoft's Active Server Pages technology.

Microsoft introduced Active Server Pages in the late 1990s, and it became a popular way to build interactive websites and web applications, particularly on Windows-based web servers. You can open and view the contents of an .asp file with a source code editor or plain text editor because it is stored as readable text. However, viewing an ASP file as a working web page requires a web server configured to support Classic ASP, such as Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).
