About AMR Files

.amr Icon

A .amr file is an audio file that stores speech or voice recordings using the Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) codec, a format designed for efficient compression of human speech. AMR files are commonly used on mobile phones, especially older models, to save voice memos, audio messages, and call recordings. The format comes in two versions: AMR-NB (Narrowband) for standard speech and AMR-WB (Wideband) for higher-quality voice audio.

Ericsson developed the AMR format and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standardized it for use in GSM and UMTS cellular networks. It became widely used in the early 2000s as part of mobile communication technologies, including MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) and voice call recording. While still supported on many devices and apps, AMR files are less commonly used today, with formats like MP3 and M4A offering broader compatibility and better sound quality for general audio.

Converting AMR Files

You can convert .amr files to other formats to improve playback compatibility or audio quality for specific uses:

  • Converting to MP3: Makes AMR recordings easier to play on modern devices and media players, though the sound quality may not improve due to the original speech-focused compression.
  • Converting to AAC: May offer slightly better compression efficiency and playback support on some mobile and streaming platforms, but gains in quality are minimal if the original file uses AMR-NB.
