About AA Files

.aa Icon

An .aa file is an audio file saved in a proprietary format developed by Audible, an online audiobook and podcast service. It stores audio content, primarily audiobooks, encoded with the MP3 or ACELP codecs at various bitrates, ranging from low quality (8 kbps) to higher quality (32 kbps). AA files also include embedded Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection to restrict playback on authorized devices and software.

Audible initially introduced the AA format in the late 1990s as it grew in popularity as an audiobook provider. The format was designed to support high-quality, compressed audio suitable for audiobooks and work across Audible's supported devices and apps, including smartphones, Apple iPods, and Kindle e-readers.

Over time, Audible moved away from the AA format to more enhanced formats, such as AAX and AAXC, for app-based downloads on mobile devices. These newer formats generally offer higher-quality audio, improved bookmarking features, and better compatibility with modern playback devices.

Converting AA Files

Since media players don't widely support AA files, you may find it helpful to convert them to the more common MP3 and AAC formats when sharing them. MP3 is one of the most popular audio formats worldwide and is compatible with nearly all media players and devices. Additionally, AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) provides better sound quality than MP3 at similar bitrates, making it a good choice for saving music.
